The Oscars

IMG_3184It was time to head back to LA.  I was ready to get back to the city for a weekend and connect with some people I had met on a previous trip.  No sooner than I finalized my itinerary, my phone rang.  A friend of mine out in Miami wanted to know if I’d be in LA for the Oscars and if I would be available to style her friend’s daughter for the red carpet.  Mind you, I had no idea that I would be visiting during Hollywood’s biggest night. I said ‘yes!’ without even thinking about it or knowing exactly what I was getting into.  But, the idea of being involved in such a moment was too good to miss.

After going over the details, I learned that my newest client would be Isan Elba, the daughter of the one and only Idris Elba. He was taking her as his date to the ceremony, both his and her first time, and I was being trusted with creating her look.  I don’t think there’s enough time or words to express how excited I was.  I had to talk myself out of the clouds.  Could you blame me?  I’ve watched this man make and break hearts in so many movies, and now I’d be working for him on something so special.  Once I stopped spinning around, I packed up my things and made my way West.

Fast forward, I’m headed to Beverly Hills.  My nerves were all over the place!  This time, it’s a beautiful hotel, styled like a private condo.  After a wait in the lobby, I was escorted by security to the work area.  Shortly after, in walks Idris and Isan.  I greet them both and we start to go over ideas for Isan’s look.  After the introduction my nerves began to calm. She’s a beautiful 13-year old girl; tall with a medium-length hair and brown skin to die for!  Her natural appearance would make this an easy job, for sure.  Idris himself was very laid back.  He was wearing a t-shirt, dark denim jeans with a slight sag and loafers.  Oh, you better believe I remember!  We talked about the excitement of the Oscars for a bit and the conversation helped me relax and get into my zone.

IMG_3183The goal was to create a look for Isan that was glamorous, but still appropriate for her age.  I began the process starting with her hair, then her makeup, I kept it light (POSH Collection for both, of course!), making sure it matched her gown perfectly.  Once I helped her into her gown, she could see the final result.  Both Isan and Idris loved her look and I couldn’t be happier.  After a few pictures, the two were off to the Oscars.

After a night of fun, I arrived back at the hotel to take down Isan’s hair so she would be ready for her flight the next morning.  Idris again expressed how much he loved her look and appreciated my services.  The following day, I received all kinds of phone calls and messages from everyone involved in the process.  They all told me how great Isan looked.  I couldn’t have been any happier.  Although it may have seemed like a simple job, getting a 13-year old ready for her first Oscars is something I’ll never forget.  And getting to meet Idris was pretty cool, too!
