Talk about a wonderful life! I received the assist of a lifetime when a friend of mine who sings background for Rihanna gave me the heads up on a project involving the superstar. It was originally offered to stylists in the Los Angeles area, but I couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by. And since the only thing stopping me was a five-hour flight, it was a no-brainer! I arrived in Beverly Hills ready to work and from the moment I got there, I knew this would be a memorable experience.
My excitement only grew on the way to the venue. I arrived at the address, checked in with security, and that’s when it hit me: my name was on the list as a staff member for Rihanna’s First Annual Diamond Ball! I had to keep my composure as we made it pass the entry gate. It took a little while to drive up the hill, but the view from the top was breathtaking. I felt like I was in a movie. You could literally see all of LA! Around me, landscapers and other staff members were working nonstop to transform this greenhouse into a concert hall. The layout was amazing; glass walls and ceilings, crystal dinnerware with rose red accents, and giant chandeliers. I could even see Rihanna rehearsing with the orchestra. She was dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans, with her hair pulled back in a long ponytail.
As the call time approached, I headed to one of the large tents reserved for the staff and began to set up. The agenda was simple; Rihanna requested that the orchestra all wear their hair in very sleek buns. There was close to 40 musicians, so we definitely had our work cut out for us. But after 3 or 4 hours of primping and touch-ups, they were ready for showtime.
Once we finished, we were able to watch the entire show…from the front row! The room went completely dark. The stage was lit with a constant flow of colors and once Rihanna emerged, it was a party. While the weather was the total opposite of what Los Angeles is known for, it had no effect on the vibes inside. Close to 400 people were in the building, including Kim Kardashian and a ton of other celebs. Rihanna ran through all of her hits and gave the crowd a great show.
The performance was done, but the good times kept rolling. Rihanna went from performer to host. Believe it or not, she is very down to earth. She danced and mingled with everyone all night. I even managed to snap an usie with the woman of the hour! Once the night was over, we were escorted outside where a line of shuttle buses awaited.
As I was whisked off into night, I couldn’t help feeling like I covered all the bases during this trip. Yet again, I was able to make a living doing what I know and love. I had a great time. New contacts were made. And not everyone can say they assisted in completing a special mission for one of the biggest pop stars in the world. I look forward to working with Rihanna again. Not because I hope it will happen, but I know it will!
